Ask Unc — Privacy Policy
Last updated: November 7, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Break Free Lifestyle Ltd ("we", "us", "Ask Unc") handles information when you use the Ask Unc mobile app (the "App"). Break Free Lifestyle Ltd is a company registered in England and Wales (company number 10982580), registered office C/O Contrast Accounting, Unit E4 Arena Business Centre, Holyrood Close, Poole, Dorset, United Kingdom, BH17 7FP. Ask Unc is a comedic AI "uncle" that gives entertainment-style advice. It is offered in the United States only.
If you have questions, contact us at contactus@bflifestyle.com.
The short version
- You can use Ask Unc without an account — no sign-up, no email, no password.
- Your name, nickname, and settings are stored on your device, not on our servers.
- When you ask Unc a question, the text of your question (and, for voice, your audio) is sent to our backend and to the AI and voice providers that generate the reply.
- We keep an anonymized cache of common questions and answers to make the App fast and cheap. Personal nicknames are replaced with a placeholder, and the cache is not linked to you or your device.
- We do not sell your personal information and we do not use it for advertising.
- Ask Unc is not a medical, mental-health, legal, or emergency service. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or 911.
Who this is for
Ask Unc is intended for users 16 and older. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us information, contact contactus@bflifestyle.com and we will delete it.
Information we handle
1. Information stored on your device (not sent to us)
When you set up and use the App, the following is saved locally on your device using your operating system's standard storage, and is not transmitted to our servers except as described in section 2:
- The name and nickname you choose, and your preferences (e.g., voice auto-play).
- Your daily usage count (how many questions you've asked today).
- Your current chat history during use.
You can erase this at any time with Settings → Delete my data, or by deleting the App.
2. Information processed when you ask a question
To generate Unc's reply, we process:
- The text of your question. It is sent to our backend and to our AI provider, which generates the response.
- Your nickname, so Unc can address you (it is replaced with a placeholder before any caching — see section 3).
- Voice input (optional). If you ask by voice, your audio recording is sent to our voice provider to convert it to text; we do not retain the recording after it is transcribed.
- Spoken replies (optional). To read answers aloud, the text of the reply is sent to our voice provider, which returns an audio clip. We store these audio clips keyed to the text (not to you) so the same line is never generated twice.
3. Anonymized question-and-answer cache
To answer common questions instantly and keep costs down, we store questions and Unc's answers on our backend. Before storing, your personal nickname is replaced with a generic placeholder. This cache is not associated with your identity, account, or device, and is shared across users.
4. Purchases (if/when subscriptions are offered)
If we offer a paid "Unc Pro" subscription, purchases are handled by Apple. We (through our subscription provider) receive your subscription status (e.g., active or expired) — not your card number or full payment details.
5. Technical information
We keep short-term server logs needed to operate and protect the service (for example, to debug errors and prevent abuse). We do not use third-party analytics or advertising SDKs, and we do not track you across apps or websites.
What we do not collect
- No account, email address, or password (unless you email us for support).
- No precise location, contacts, photos, or device advertising identifiers.
- We do not sell or rent your personal information.
How we use information
- To generate and deliver Unc's replies (text and voice).
- To run the free daily limit and, if offered, a paid subscription.
- To make the App fast and affordable (the anonymized cache in section 3).
- To keep the service safe, reliable, and free of abuse.
- To comply with the law.
Service providers we share data with
We use trusted providers to run the App. They process data only to provide their service to us:
| Provider | Purpose | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Backend hosting, database, file storage | Your question text; the anonymized Q&A cache; generated voice clips; server logs |
| Anthropic (Claude) | Generates Unc's replies | The text of your question (and recent chat context) |
| ElevenLabs | Voice (text-to-speech) and transcription (speech-to-text) | The text to speak; your voice recording for transcription |
| Apple | App distribution and (if offered) purchases | Purchase/subscription data, per Apple's own privacy policy |
| RevenueCat (if subscriptions are offered) | Manages subscription status | Your anonymized purchase/subscription status |
Our AI provider processes your questions to generate replies and, under its business terms, does not use them to train its models. Each provider has its own privacy policy; we encourage you to review them.
Data retention
- On-device data stays until you delete it (Delete my data, or uninstall).
- Anonymized cache answers are kept so the App can keep serving them quickly; because they are not linked to you, they are not tied to your deletion request.
- Voice recordings are not retained after transcription. Generated voice clips are cached by text.
- Server logs are kept only as long as needed to operate and secure the service.
Your choices and rights
- Delete your on-device data any time via Settings → Delete my data, or by uninstalling the App.
- Depending on where you live (for example, California under the CCPA/CPRA, and other U.S. state privacy laws), you may have rights to access, delete, or correct personal information, and to not be discriminated against for exercising them. Because Ask Unc does not require an account and the cache is anonymized, we often cannot connect server-side data to a specific person; where we can, contact contactus@bflifestyle.com and we will respond as required by law.
- We do not sell or "share" personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
UK data protection (UK GDPR)
Because our operator, Break Free Lifestyle Ltd, is established in the United Kingdom, UK data-protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018) applies to our processing of personal data, even though the App is offered to users in the United States.
Controller. Break Free Lifestyle Ltd is the data controller for the personal data described in this Policy. Contact: contactus@bflifestyle.com.
Lawful bases. We rely on the following lawful bases under Article 6(1) UK GDPR:
- Performance of a contract (Art. 6(1)(b)) — to provide the App and generate Unc's replies when you ask a question.
- Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)) — to keep the App fast and affordable (the anonymized question-and-answer cache), to keep the service secure, and to prevent abuse. We balance these against your rights and freedoms.
- Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)) — where we ask for it, for example your in-app acknowledgement that answers come from an AI provider, and any optional features. You can withdraw consent at any time; this does not affect processing already done.
- Legal obligation (Art. 6(1)(c)) — where we must process data to comply with law.
We do not use the personal data in your questions to carry out automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects, and we do not knowingly process "special category" data; please don't include sensitive personal details in your questions.
International transfers. Our providers (for example Supabase, Anthropic and ElevenLabs) may process data outside the UK, including in the United States. Where we transfer personal data outside the UK, we use an appropriate safeguard, such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement (IDTA) or the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, or we rely on UK adequacy regulations where they apply. [Confirm the exact mechanism in place with each provider.]
Your UK rights. Subject to the conditions in the UK GDPR, you have the right to: access your data; have it rectified or erased; restrict or object to processing; data portability; and to withdraw consent. Because the App has no account and the server-side cache is anonymized, we often cannot link server data to you; where we can, we will act on a verified request. To exercise a right, email contactus@bflifestyle.com.
Complaints. You can also complain to the UK supervisory authority, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) — ico.org.uk, helpline 0303 123 1113 — though we'd appreciate the chance to resolve it with you first.
Retention. See the Data retention section above.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Where we operate
Ask Unc is offered to users in the United States. Our operator is established in the United Kingdom, and personal data is processed in the UK, the United States, and the facilities of our providers (see International transfers above).
Changes to this policy
We may update this Policy. We will revise the "Last updated" date and, for material changes, provide notice in the App. Continued use after changes means you accept the updated Policy.
